My best friends wedding, part 1

Hello, Portland.
How are you?  progressive? yep.  unpretentious? yep.  Rainy in August?  YEP.  Which is actually fine, I don't like hot weather clothes - I love my little short dresses, but only with tights as I am happily very fair, but unhappily constantly bruised because i'm clumsy and have very questionable spatial awareness with my body.  Wearing tights in 90 degrees seems weird, but not here, when its 65.

wow that was inane.

In case any of you are left reading, I'm up in Portland for the week.  I'm kinda art directing my best friends wedding this weekend and my friend Chelsea (from Frolic fame) is styling and executing the tabletops.  and she is awesome.

The bride wants (aka I want) hot pink, random, effortless, imperfect, weedy arrangements on the table. Very loose and organic.  I don't do tight.  And Chelsea is totally on board.  Here is the inspiration picture.  I love that some just have greenery, and i get the feeling that down the table every arrangement is different.

I know. its ridiculous.  We are using different flowers than these because we aren't millionaires, and peonies in Oregon are like $35 a stem off season.  But Chelsea has ordered garden roses in corals and hot pinks (garden roses are in general super petal-y and can often look like peonies, way more organic and sculptural than the ubiquitous rose)  and a bunch of awesome weedy greens, dahlias, blackberries.

its gonna be sick.

love this one too, prob not for the wedding because we are using all vintage different mason jars (which we are renting for 50 cents a piece from a 'collector' - craigslist fellas), but it's such a beautiful shot.
Amazing.

These are also up there in flowers that i want to eat i love so much.  what if I was standing in the ceremony quietly eating my bouquet.  not saying anything about it or acting like it was weird.  just picking petals slowly off of it and putting them in my mouth. maybe smiling now again, nodding in agreement during sentimental parts.  wiping a tear. chewing the petal, then swallowing.

Love love love.
i think i'm hungry.

Visit Chelsea's blog.  It's a daily fave.
Do it.
i'm off to buy more plaid and drink some coffee.  'cause i be in portland, fellas.

  1. We're still here! I love how you're balancing out the t.v. posts with these real-life ones...your blog is my fave.

I didn't have any flowers at my wedding other than my bouquet and those of my bridesmaids, but if I HAD done floral centerpieces, I would have wanted exactly what you're going for in the first picture, only in all-white. I love white-on-white. I hope you post some pics from the wedding!!!

  7. Love the blog. Loved you on DesignStar. Congrats!!! Yeah for Oregon! If the wedding is this weekend, you probably have most everything you need - I got married last summer and we have about 65+ large quart wide mouth mason jars with pearl & crystal garland around the rim. We put candles in them and lined a long driveway. We used different jars for everything! If you needed more jars for the wedding let me know, I'd be glad to let you borrow them! http://abbyandadam.blogspot.com/2010/08/time-flys.html

Ok, so after I saw the greenhouse episode, I totally wanted you to win.
I am confused about the two "after" shots of ians house.
Do you explain this on the show? How come there are two different make-over looks?

  15. Great post! I've never been to Portland...but I did write a story set in Portland when I was assigned to do so in fifth grade or so. I think my story involved a lost dog!

  19. so glad I found this:) we collected dessert dishes ..hobnail, depression glass.. some new and old...and floated flowers in them at my wedding and then we used them at both of my sister's weddings. I love that you can rent a collection of Mason jars..what an idea:)

  20. Have you seen Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette? Throughout the film Kristen Dunst gorges herself on heavily frosted pink cakes and frilly confections; so much so that when she's lounging in a pastoral field of budding flowers, I was completely convinced that she was about to chow down on a few petals herself.

You just reminded me of that scene! Can you imagine? I think eating flower petals would be very regal...not weird or bovine-like at all. :)

  21. Cool weather clothes, Layers Galore!! I've realized you are the closest human version of a Fairy or Elf (Lord of Rings, Eh). Thats meant as a compliment. I'd never squash you in the pages of my Diary (like Lady Cottington

  22. Hey! That reminds me of my wedding! We did wild, weedy, random flowers in collected jars.
    Mostly pickle jars.
Because I eat a lot of pickles...

  23. I did all the flowers for our wedding last year - it was in May so I got to have peonies! As I was making my bouquet with these huge, fluffy pink peonies, I kept saying that I wanted to eat it. I think we even have a picture somewhere of me trying to take a bite. YUM!

  27. and speaking of Portland...we just promoted our home in Portland for your show! We know the casting company only mentioned Los Angeles...but we think a field trip to Portland would bring in billions of viewers...maybe...or not...but it WOULD be a fun show :)

  28. That's so funny, I too have questionable spatial awarenes/aka clumsiness - taking corners too short and bumping into things I drive myself crazy. Anyhoo, pretty flowers, have fun at the wedding. Your dress is cute too.

  29. Is your Craigslist source for mason jars an older and slightly certifiably insane Californian on the east side?
Small little world of mason jars...I once spent nearly two hours walking between waist-high cardboard boxes of mason jars that he would let me admire, but not purchase. A story for ages...definitely a hoarder.
But I did score a sweet antique Portland Coffee jar.
    Have fun!

  33. That post was so stinkin' funny, I was crying. Thanks for a much needed big laugh attack.

On a side note... I went to a wedding where a groomsmen actually took a bite out of a bouquet. Not because he loved the combo of flowers, but because he was dared and a bit intoxicated. Needless to say it didn't go well and he ended up in the ER with a horrible allergic reaction to the flowers he munched on. So, be careful if you decide to take a bite. Ha.
