AHHHHHH.. thank you guys so much for all the support. Its so hard to be objective, but the fact that you guys loved it so much means a lot to me.
thank you soooo much.
and in case you want HGTV to know how you feel
you can leave a comment by clicking here
there will be haters. as there always is. and yes it is baffling at times how cruel some people can be. ignore them and just write what you want.
xoxoxoxo
i love you so much
You are totally awesome in your awesomeness. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
ReplyDeleteFinally found where to post at HGTV. Thanks. The link will help too.
ReplyDeleteSome one is asking about your style type questions. Are they written some where we can go look? Was hard to remember them all during the show.
So loved the show. Loved your quirky voice and your process. I MUST have that gray grass cloth in my next home. Hmmm, recording EVERY show and building my own board. Thank you for inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI'm still holding on to the hope of having my own Emily Henderson makeover.
Can't wait until next week!
So happy to find your blog (after googling you while watching the show --was also a fan of yours on Design Star)! Have to say (and I'm not just saying this & actually don't even usually comment on blogs, just lurk :) that your show is one of the best I've seen on HGTV. Truly! Combines so many fun elements (art/design/interests/fashion) and also provides helpful tips that I think I will actually *use* and apply in my own home! And you are so fun to watch, very relatable and natural. I hope it gets picked up! (heading over to HGTV now to tell them so :)
ReplyDeleteLoved your show!!! My husband actually sat and watched until I started pointing out all the pieces that I would love for our house.....then he kinda drifted off (oh well).
ReplyDeleteIf you are ever up for a challenge in Denver, CO, you are welcome to come to my house. And when I say 'challenge' I'm not kidding. My tastes are so scattered and I'm so indecisive that my name should be Sybil.
Anyway, fantastic show! You make the design process seem effortless (which is why I can't understand what my problem is?!??!)
Congrats! I can't wait to see more.
Watching your show now, LOVE IT! =) You're a total natural! Awesome, comfortable job in front of the camera, great work!
ReplyDeleteWatched your new show! Really likey!! You and the show content were very watchable and lots of fun. So nice to see that SpArkLe on HGTV! Keep up the good work. If you enjoy what you are doing, it will show in your enthusiasm, and success will follow. Just be your best you...that's what got you this far! Best wishes. ~ Angela
ReplyDeleteThis is quite possibly the best compliment ever:
ReplyDeleteMy boyfriend was upset that I erased your show off the DVR before he watched it. Seems like he's been a closet Emily fan all this time, pretending to be working on something while I'm watching Design Star. Funny!
I left a comment on hgtv page, and I'm repeating myself by telling you: You've exceeded my expectations! WOW! My son (almost 21yo, hehe) watched the show too, and liked a lot (and that's says a lot! He never ever watches anything on hgtv)
ReplyDeleteMarina
Love the show and shared my raving compliments with HGTV!! Can't wait to see future episodes! All the best!
ReplyDeleteLOVED the show! bravo!
ReplyDeleteLove your blog, loved the show. You truly are an inspiration to this fellow Angeleno trying to make it as a decorator.
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job! Love your style, taste, interpretation of Ian's style. My only constructive criticism is that some of the tips were rushed through (for example, how you know how to hang the 3 pieces of art in the grasscloth room)...so I found myself trying to repeat what you just said so that I could process it. I will be tuning in!
ReplyDeleteI loved loved LOVED the show! I will def. be tuning in next week.
ReplyDeleteWas the "The Big Lebowski" reference intentional? That totally won us over!
ReplyDeleteLoved the show, love the Melrose flea, loved the home, love the cute carpenter, love that it was an hour long, loved the end result and the process of getting there. Loved that you showed a lot of cool stuff that I would buy or have. Now we'll never get those Edison lights, they will be sold out of Anthro forever. Loved the toile and the grass cloth. Loved the secret room office. Loved the bookcase styling especially that it went back to all white. Loved that it was not an HGTV show about real estate, 1st time buyers, property virgins. It had so many great ideas! Can't wait for more. HGTV, you better pick this show up.
ReplyDeleteGreat job, Emily!! It was such a breath of fresh air... and the finished result was BEAUTIFUL. I want to come live there, too! Some things I really liked about the show (so please keep them when it gets picked up as a regular series! :)):
ReplyDelete- The shopping tips! This was so great... I had no idea you could rent a piece of furniture to try out scale and style before committing. And I loved the tips about what to look for in what type of store, flea markets, etc. Keep those coming! Much more useful to those of us in the real world on a budget than a truck pulling up from a big store and unloading thousands of dollars of designer selected furniture.
- The style diagnostic idea was great. I'd even like a bit more... maybe looking in his closet to see what colors/patterns the client is actually drawn to for himself? Liked having Ian pick fabric patterns and arrange things in order of preference.
- REALLY liked how you layered the three styles, and showed Ian after each one. It was so interesting that he didn't prefer the mod look as much as he thought he would, and I loved seeing how the different elements in each style really changed the feel of the room.
What a great start! Now we just need to get HGTV to sign you up for a series... already made my plea on the website.
I enjoyed your show. It was great to see a show showing us ideas for decorating (styling) our spaces. Love your energy level-just be careful it doesn't become frantic :-)
ReplyDeleteAll in all great first time.
Sharon
Hi Emily. Brilliant show last night. I loved the mood board idea and started one last night (talk about inspiration) right after the show as I've moved to a new house and have rooms to decorate. I was intrigued by the layering idea as I have several styles that are me as do my hubby and while it's always been easy to do guest bedrooms in themes the challenge has been to mix our eclectic tastes. NOw I can take pieces and parts of what I like, put it on a mood board, mix it around, take out what doesn't work, add more for a look-see, and voila, I'll have the rooms of my dreams.
ReplyDeleteI love the fabrics, colors, textures, shapes that you mixed in Ian's house. My new favorite word is layering. And hubby and I like to travel so layers is so necessary and just like that now I can change an "identified" layer in my rooms and get a refreshed look.
You hit a home run and I'm sure HGTV knows it. Can't wait for your next show.
I loved it! I really did. I felt bad for whomever had to paint the back of the bookshelves again, haha.
ReplyDeleteI loved your look, voice, tips, EVERYTHING. I will watch this show every sunday!!! Keep up the good work! And come and do my house! I'm traditional, vintage and graphic.
Huh.
So original! Emily you are adorable! I gave you a little plug on my blog if you get a chance!

By far and away the BEST line of the night: "It's okay. Because it's not a baby. It's a sconce." Hahahahaha! Creative and funny--I love it!
ReplyDeleteGREAT GREAT SHOW! HGTV BETTER PICK IT UP!!!! All your tips are great and I love the delivery. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI love your show! I will be watching for this one. Refreshinging different!
ReplyDeletefinally a show I can relate to! big fan already, though, sometimes it felt a bit rush. pace yourself sister, because you have way too much to offer!
ReplyDeleteI've already commented here and on HGTV last night, but I just keep thinking about parts of the show. As I was going to bed it was coming on again, so I fell asleep trying to do my own diagnostic! But I'm all over the place; modern vintage, Napoleon exiled to New Orleans and dinner with the Cullens and the Brady Bunch! I think I will try making my own mood board with your method! and, I need that gray grasscloth!
ReplyDeleteYour show was fantastic! I am not a designer, just a viewer and I love anything to do with decorating. Your show was so fresh - I've never seen a process like yours before. I loved your 'diagnostic' approach to figuring out a person's style and your layering of the room. You really have great ideas for a wanna-be like me! :) I thought you really did a great job with the hosting too.
ReplyDeleteReally, really enjoyed the show! Yay! In thinking about it, it was one of the very FEW shows where I actually watched the MIDDLE of the show, too. On so many HGTV shows, you only need to catch the first 5 & the last 5 minutes & the rest is just filler. Posting praise on HGTV later!! Remember me when you come to Dallas! :)
ReplyDeleteShelly in Dallas
Emily,
ReplyDelete"My room makes me full of Glee" hahaha
Luv you, luv your show
Sophia
Great show. Sooooo tired of nothin' but house hunters. That obviously is a cheaper show to produce but boring!!! Hoped all through Design Star HGTV realized the value a stylist could bring to the network. You didn't disappoint. Great rhythm to the show. Enjoy the tips and explanations of design. Love the whole concept. Good luck!!! Hoping HGTV is happy with it too. Living in Iowa but still seeing the world
ReplyDeleteThe show was fantastic! Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteI'm on a Scipps' viewer panel and therefore respond to surveys about different shows from time to time. As I clicked through my survey this morning, I found myself smiling...I haven't felt this enthusiastic about an HGTV show in a while. The only bummer was that the survey made reference to a possible half hour show and I thought the one hour format was the perfect fit.
yay yay yay!!! loved it! such fun, great designs. i love that you really explain WHY you make certain decisions.
ReplyDeleteand i loved how at ease you were in front of the camera. makes the viewer so much more comfortable...
i went to college for interior design, but no longer work in the field. you and your show made me excited about design again! it was even better than thumbing through the pages of a brand new domino!
hgtv NEEDS you. they need you to be current. not everyone wants to have all brand new things and have a shiny new space...
anyways HOORAY for you and we cannot wait to see you on a weekly basis! :)
Emily- you did an amazing job!! I loved the show. It was so refreshing and you made all the spaces look incredible. Great job girl, can't wait to see more! Oh, and ps...can I steal your wardrobe? :)
ReplyDeleteThe grey grasscloth was STUNNING. It looked so good next to the trim ... I think that room was my favorite, which surprised me. Can't wait to see your series! Yea!
ReplyDeleteThe show was fantastic and you are the perfect injection of life and happiness, talent and smarts, quirkiness and style that HGTV needed. They needed you so badly. I'm thrilled that they had the smarts to recognize your fresh and modern approach to living and its appeal to the masses. I will be recording and watching every episode so that I don't miss a thing! You look and sound wonderful in front of the camera, completely at ease, engaging and approachable. And of course, the final result just blew me away. Totally jealous that Ian gets to come home to this pad day after day!
ReplyDeleteEmily, I was so happy when you won DS, and last night proved why! You did an AMAZING job in Ian's house! I loved all three living rooms, and you explained everything so well, that I actually understood why you were changing things up! Your show is really the first to have a sort of "live-able style". David Bromstead's (who I love) is more posh (nothing wrong with that), but seems a little unattainable for us DIYers. Congrats to you on an amazing job well done! Its been sooo fun sitting on the sidelines on watching this incredible journey of yours! Can't wait to see what you do next!! As for me, My house is getting a little injection of Emily Henderson sans the real Emily!!
ReplyDeleteNOOOOO!! I just realized HGTV isn't posting full episodes of secrets of stylist online to watch. I live in Canada and neither 'Design Star' nor 'Secrets of Stylist' air on the Canadian HGTV. And I can't find the show anywhere to watch online :( :(
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone have any suggestions?
I'm very disappointed...
I LOVED the show!
ReplyDeleteLOVED it!
It's so nice to see some GOOD and FRESH designing on hgtv. I kept thinking "they were so lucky to find this girl." Thanks! xo
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job, packed so much information into one hour! I hope there will be more to follow! Janell
ReplyDeleteIt was a great show! Congrats, Emily. You truly deserved to win! I learned a ton by watching and I even DVR'd it so I can watch it again! Can't wait to be a regular viewer.
ReplyDeleteYou rocked it sista!!! You're like no one else on HGTV....they knew exactly what they were doing when they picked YOU!!!! You are very relatable to everyone and don't take yourself to seriously! Best quality to have! Love the layering aspect of the show. Put it in, take it out....keep that concept for sure! Loved how you had the pricing for each item....now, where do we find those items? xoxox Julie R.
ReplyDeleteI saw you for the first time last night, and LOVED you! My 9 year old had me take notes and my husband said you were the first designer he actually liked. Your creations look and are thoughtful and not ego centric. Your quirkiness, approachable demeanor and humor is the perfect combo...don't hesitate to use it. We spent the rest of the evening imitating you saying "MOROCCAN!" I have the perfect project for you in Seattle...how to turn darkness into light!
ReplyDeleteI thought you were FABULOUS!! I loved your style during Design Star but I was even more impressed during the pilot last night how you were able to explain all of your design decisions so that we could tackle projects at home. Very inspiring, and it was great to see your personality shine through. My new fave on HGTV. :) And, of course, I had to write a blog post about it b/c I'm a nerd. :)
ReplyDeleteI LOVED your show! It was like Domino magazine came to life on HGTV. I can't believe the network actually let something so creative and idiosyncratic slip into their rigid line-up of real estate, granite and stainless steel. Congratulations! You're a natural talent and really fun to watch!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, Emily! Just had a long perv through all the screen caps - tasty taste
ReplyDeleteI must say I had more shots during your first episode then I did at your viewing party and honey let me tell you that is A LOT! :-)
ReplyDeleteThe rooms looked awesome. Your history, minus "The Beatles" was enlightening and refreshing. :-) Ian was hilarious and kept us entertained.
Great work.
Hey Emily! I wanted to pass along a post I just made on HGTV.com. I want to point out that this is the 1st time I have EVER posted on a design blog or HGTV - despite being avid fans of both - and it's because of your awesome-ness. Congrats and all the best to you! My husband+I will be rooting for you from Chicago!
ReplyDeleteHere it is:
Emily's approach to styling a room resonates with me...so much so that I even watched it LIVE versus on DVR.
I am a 28-year old, married 1st time home buyer of a brick loft in Chicago. I'm into fashion & style and trying to do exactly what she's teaching - decorate our loft in a way that reflects my husband + I's personal style.
To me, this is much more difficult than just decorating a room because we are trying to figure out WHO we are in the process...and then HOW we can reflect that style in our loft.
What we do know is we are not "room in a bag" type of people. Instead, we want to decorate with found items but don't know where to start because it's much easier to just go buy a bedroom set...this is completely in line with what Emily's trying to teach us.
While I like a lot of shows on HGTV, I have never written on this site because I have never cared this much about any of the shows to want to speak up - but I do with Emily.
What's she trying to teach us is an art, not a science. There are plenty of shows on HGTV that show us the science of decorating - now, let Emily teach us the art of it. Please continue to bring us more of her show and her approach. She'll become more polished with experience and time.
Emily, you did great. Loved your approach and energy on the show. And of course the outcome. Clever. I posted about it, check it out:)
ReplyDeleteBravo! I greatly enjoyed the show. Your personality and design sense are a really refreshing addition to hgtv. Thanks for being AWESOME!!
ReplyDeleteLoved the show! I LOL'd when you said, "Can I take off the fake glasses now?"
ReplyDeleteBut seriously, did you really know all that stuff about William Henry Harrison and NOT know that Ringo was the drummer? Hilarious, btw.
You've inspired me to do some styling in my own home. In fact, I just styled a shelf, and on it I used the same Royal typewriter that you used on the show (I've had it for years). :-)
Hey Emily, I don't have cable and I always watched Design Star the next morning online and it seemed like they were always quick to post it. I was hoping they would post your show online too but so far no luck :-( Do you know if they will be making it available on the website? I haven't had a chance to watch it yet but the pics look fab.
ReplyDelete-Reni
I thought it was great! I'm super excited for the series. You're extremely talented and funny and cute!
ReplyDeleteEmily. The show. Oh gracious. It's simply lovely. And fun and quirky and totally informative and you make me want to figure out my style and do this to my house. Or if you're in need of a place to spiff up, I'll offer my house for the taking. Seriously, you did such a great job. The show is super fun, and I can't wait to see the next episode. I'm actually not deleting it off my DVR by the way; that's how much I learned. It must be savored and referenced for generations to come. Congratulations. Job well done.
ReplyDeleteEmily - you basically gave HGTV a makeover that it seriously needed. I loved the show, loved your work and get this - my boyfriend actually sat next to me and watched it too! He even ooh'd and ahh'd over the dark gray grasscloth you used! He was in his office ALL day working on his fantasy football draft and he came out in the living room and watched a design show and liked it? whaa?
ReplyDeleteI LIKE that you're quirky and a little rough on camera. It makes you relatable. I LIKE that there weren't horrendous "art projects" that HGTV loves to do. HGTV needs to order up a million episodes because I will watch em all!
So proud of you, my dear! A breath of fresh air, indeed.
ReplyDeleteLove from your fellow HGTV blogger!
e.
LOVED your show last night!! we just moved into a new house and the decorating part scares me to death! but then after watching your show, I got all inspired and rearranged some things in my living room :) I live in sacramento, CA... you're more than welcome to come style my house :)
ReplyDeleteCount me among your many gushing fans :)
ReplyDeleteRead my review: Emily Henderson vs. David Bromstad! http://bit.ly/b43A3i
Emily, I was so excited to wake up this morning and watch your show on HGTV.com because I don't have cable and.... it is not on!!! Beg for me for them to post it so I can watch please!! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteYou're so adorable it hurts. Don't polish yourself too much, love your personality!
ReplyDeleteAlso, you appear to know more than all the HGTV hosts put together about how to properly style and accent a room.
you're it, girl!
Loved the show!!! I just posted a gushing review to that effect over at HGTV (something I have NEVER done before!)and can't wait till the actual series gets going. If you're ever in Sacramento, CA and need a room to redo I'm a "Midcentury, Schoolhouse, Anthropology" kinda girl. You are welcome anytime!
ReplyDeleteI just have to tell you that your show was just great. I watched expecting to see some rough moments that would get better with more experience. But no...it was perfection. I love how real you are. I watched it twice...it was so good and will most likely watch it again. I loved what you did with that house. I loved your little test to find out what Ian's style was. I posted today all about your show on my blog.
ReplyDeletewww.modvintagelife.com
I've never done that before. I'll go post on HGTV's site too. Because your show just has to become a regular on their schedule.
My 13 year old daughter just posted on her blog about you! She just loves your style! http://hartleyofgreyville.blogspot.com/2010/08/girls-that-inspire-me.html
ReplyDeletei left a nice comment for you over on hgtv. it was the first time i missed an episode of mad men and not sorry. great show!
ReplyDeleteSo much in one show, can't wait for more. Great job.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! My heart was swollen with pride as a Portland-er graced the screen. Swoon!
ReplyDeleteIf you ever need a bright young creative designer in Portland - it would be an utter dream to work with you...
Leigha
P.S. Off to comment at HGTV!
Yay! HGTV finally posted the show - I was so impatient to watch! I love your approach to designing for someone - the layering and changing as you go. I was shocked when the first change happened! Very engaging! You, of course, are so bloody cute - I can't wait to see this approach applied to someone you don't know. Is the studio your new digs?! I certainly recognize that couch and flag! ;) Very suave! Thanks for a wonderful show - I can't wait for more!
